{"id":558,"date":"2024-11-14T18:30:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T18:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visualstressclinic.ca\/?page_id=558"},"modified":"2026-01-21T01:34:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T01:34:12","slug":"adhd","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/opticalm.ca\/fr\/adhd\/","title":{"rendered":"ADHD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section_0 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_block_section\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row et_block_row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_0 et_pb_column et_pb_column_2_3 et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_0 et_pb_accordion et_pb_module et_block_module preset--module--divi-accordion--1d4c8462-fda3-45f8-8b7c-cf670041e540\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module preset--module--divi-text--32c4d5c6-ac4d-49d3-9b52-38ab407aae5b\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h4>(ADHD)<\/h4>\n<h2>Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/h2>\n<p>Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder categorized by symptoms such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>inattention<\/strong> (difficulty sustaining attention and mental effort, forgetfulness, and distractibility);<\/li>\n<li><strong>hyperactivity<\/strong> (fidgeting, excessive talking and restlessness); and<\/li>\n<li><strong>impulsivity<\/strong> (difficulty waiting for one\u2019s turn and frequent interruption of others). [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3777342\/\">1<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the cause of ADHD is unknown, it has been suggested that dysfunctional cortical activation and variations in stimulus processing may play an important role in behavioural inhibition, self-regulation and stimulus control. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/8454372_Effects_of_color_stimulation_on_handwriting_performance_of_children_with_ADHD_without_and_with_additional_learning_disabilities\">2<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Visual Stress is a visual-perceptual disorder that leads to increased cortical activation and difficulty processing visual stimuli such as flicker (from fluorescent lights), glare, contrast and patterns (found in text and lined paper). The resulting symptoms reported include inattention \u2014 difficulty concentrating and being easily distracted when reading, writing or when under fluorescent lighting (most classrooms); hypersensitivity to certain visual images, and fidgeting.<\/p>\n<p>A 2013 study in Australia notes that previous investigations of Visual Stress have identified several clinical features of symptom manifestation which are strikingly similar to those found in ADHD. Their study identified a strong degree of symptom overlap and stated that \u201cit is likely that many individuals with Visual Stress may be misdiagnosed with ADHD.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/hrcak.srce.hr\/109415\">3<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>A 2004 study in Germany found that typical features of handwriting improve with coloured writing paper and lead to better overall legibility of the work. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/8454372_Effects_of_color_stimulation_on_handwriting_performance_of_children_with_ADHD_without_and_with_additional_learning_disabilities\">2<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In August 2023, researchers in Israel released a paper suggesting that spectral filters may be an adjunctive treatment for individuals suffering from perceptually-based attention issues common to ADHD and Visual Stress. [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37528514\/\">4<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Practical implications of these findings are to provide individuals with ADHD with additional non-intrusive assistive tools to support the regulation of attention.
